"One of the goals in creating the Immunology and Infectious Disease major was specifically to address current threats of bioterrorism, severe acute respiratory syndrome, avian influenza, and anthrax, and to prepare the next generation to battle future emerging diseases."

Dr. Andrew Henderson Dr. Andrew Henderson, Director of the Center for Molecular Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Penn State, teaches courses in the IID major.

What is Immunology?

Immunology describes how the body copes with bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections, cancer, and other diseases. It requires expertise and analysis from the level of molecules and cells all the way up to populations and ecosystems.
Students in the Immunology and Infectious Disease major at Penn State thus obtain a solid foundation in mathematics, physical sciences, chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. They then enjoy the opportunity to specialize with courses in immunology, microbiology, epidemiology, and bacterial and viral pathogenesis.
